Cloud Seeding Back
Gallery 35
UK 2009
Press Release
This summer, gallery 35 is launching new 'life as art' 12th month project 'Cloud Seeding' by art duo ATOI ARTS, Amy Thomas and Oliver Irvine.
ATOI ARTS have been specially selected and invited to spend a six month artists residency at The Chinese European Art Center, in Xiamen, China, starting 1st Aug 2009. Whilst in China they will be working on the 'Cloud Seeding' project, the project is inspired by methods throughout the world to control weather systems. This art project has been awarded major funding from the Arts Council England.
Gallery 35 will showcase the project throughout the duration of 12 months. We will launch the project on the 25th July 2009, thereafter, we will set a screen in the gallery where visitors can view the artists online Cloud Seeding blog. We will hold a further exhibition at the conclusion of the project in July 2010.
For the exhibition launch ATOI ARTS have created new large scale sculptures, sound pieces and sky paintings that refer to their research on cloud seeding. Their works combine ideas of using metaphors for broken cycles and detrimental human and environmental control.
Cloud Seeding is a form of weather modification used throughout the world and most commonly throughout China and attempts to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds. This type of weather modification is plainly to control and precisely predict the weather. It interrupts and breaks a completely natural cycle and with detrimental consequences.
"We find this a fascinating metaphor in terms of applying to the human condition and in global, social and economic ideals. This is because we feel there is a desire within human nature to be able to control and predict the uncontrollable, the unpredictable, the natural and the powerful all with detrimental consequences" ATOI ARTS
Amy Thomas and Oliver Irvine are two collaborative artists who have been working together for a number of years, initiating ambitious works of art and projects. They recently opened a six month gallery/project space on a high street in the Peak District in which they created sculptures, paintings and performative installations for the general public.
